Let's Talk About Death

"Why?"

That's often the first question people ask the owners and employees of Heritage Life Story Funeral Homes after finding out who they work for and what they do for a living. It's usually that followed by an awkward silence, a subtle rebuff, a rapid-fire interrogation ("You actually touch dead bodies? Do you believe in zombies? Have you ever accidentally buried someone alive?") or, on occasion, genuine interest.

There are few professions shrouded in as much mystery as that of the funeral director. And there are even fewer topics of conversation more off-putting and taboo than (insert whisper voiceDEATH (insert gasp). And yet death is our only universal certainty, our cosmic common denominator, something we will all face again and again, but still refuse to talk about.

As a result, our perceptions of death, funeral homes and the people who work there are shaped by the "professionals" like Harry Sultenfuss, Nate Fisher and, duh, Morticia and Gomez Addams. While we're grateful to Cousin Itt and HBO for their end-of-life/afterlife insights, we just can't let the conversation stop there.

We want to talk about death and dying and grieving; in fact, we need to talk about them. What if through an open and honest dialogue, we could actually begin to destigmatize and dare we say, embrace our mortality?

Will it be awkward? Most likely.
Will it be cringeworthy? Sometimes.
Will it be humorous? Certainly.
Will it be offensive? Hope not, but maybe.
Is it all necessary? Absolutely.

Here's some good news. Our friends at Heritage have agreed to start an authentic conversation with us about death. They are opening up their lives to us and letting us ask them anything we want to about their jobs, about funerals, death customs, burials, bodies, grief, self care...anything. Dozens of you have already submitted your questions and we have started to film our answers. (Spoiler alert: We've already filmed some Q&A in the embalming room, in a dark basement and sitting next to a giant (live) goldendoodle.)
